Author's Purpose (P.I.E) Lesson Plan
File Size: | 449 kb |
File Type: | docx |
For this lesson, my 3rd grade students learned how to determine an author's purpose. In order to help them remember the three purposes, we learned the acronym "PIE", which stands for persuade, inform, and entertain. The students were then split up into groups, and each group was asked to read an article from a Scholastic News booklet. Once everyone in the group was finished reading, they participated in a turn and talk to determine together what they thought the author's purpose was, and the evidence they used to come to their conclusion. Then everyone came back together, and each group shared out about the article that they read, what they thought the author's purpose was, and why they thought they were right. It was interesting to watch the students work together to figure out what the purpose of each article was, and to see them teach the other groups about what they read.

Scholastic News Lesson Plan
File Size: | 26 kb |
File Type: | docx |
For this lesson, my 2nd grade students were able to learn about current events from their Scholastic News booklets. They read about a young girl in Michigan who wanted to make a change in her community. We were then able to relate that to a lesson they had recently been taught on Martin Luther King Jr. and Helen Keller. Both of these people were able to make impacts in their communities and their countries, and we discussed how the students could make a difference in their own community. They all had some great ideas of how they could get out and do something to benefit the members of their communities, and we were able to build on those ideas throughout the lesson.
Data Collection Lesson Plan
File Size: | 26 kb |
File Type: | docx |
For this lesson, my 2nd grade students were introduced to collecting data from groups of people and displaying that data on a graph. We started off the lesson by taking a class poll on which animals were their favorites, and collecting data on how many people chose each animal. We slowly transitioned from the class providing the data to their math workbooks that had data for the students. We then worked through various problems together and discussed what different kinds of graphs would look like, including a bar graph and a pie chart. The students enjoyed being able to collect data from their peers and having it pertain to something they could all relate to. Not only did this help solidify their understanding of collecting data, but it also gave me the opportunity to learn more about them and their interests.
Magnet Experiment Lesson Plan
File Size: | 25 kb |
File Type: | docx |
For this lesson, my 2nd grade students had the opportunity to conduct some hands-on experiments to determine whether certain materials were magnetic or not. They had to record their observations in their science notebooks and organize a worksheet that had the various materials on it.The students were split up into groups, and each student was given the opportunity to test different materials. Many of the students were surprised when some of the different metal materials didn't stick to the magnet. It was a great opportunity to open up a discussion on why some materials were attracted to magnets, while others were not.

Winter Art Lesson Plan | |
File Size: | 72 kb |
File Type: | docx |
For this lesson, my 3rd grade students learned about the importance of depth and texture in art through a new art form called "crayon resist". They were tasked with creating an image using this new technique that depicted one of their holiday traditions or something that they like to do during the winter. The students were able to practice creating texture by adding salt to their images, which affected the appearance of the watercolor paint. The students then had to present their art to their peers and reflect on the images by asking "I like..." or "I wonder..." questions.
